Fernando Cruvinel DamascenoResearcher Fernando Cruvinel Damasceno was one of the winners of the Herbert Tabor Young Investigator Awards 2019, granted by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), for the article “The labile iron pool attenuates peroxynitrite-dependent damage and can no longer be considered solely the pro-oxidative cellular iron source”, published in 2018 in The Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), of which he is the first author.

Damasceno performed the research that resulted in the article during his doctorate under the supervision of Professor José Carlos Toledo Jr., from the Departamento de Química at FFCLRP/USP and a member of RIDC Redoxoma. Damasceno is currently a professor at Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco, in Piauí.

According to the JBC editorial in which the award-winning researchers were announced (Celebrating science's next generation), the Herbert Tabor award recognizes young researchers who were the first authors of the best works published in the journal in 2018. The editors highlight the “deep mechanistic dives” of the articles of a “talented group” - six researchers received the award. About the Damascene article, they claim that the work has expanded current paradigms of iron chemistry in cells.

In the award-winning article, the researchers describe results showing that labile iron, often considered pro-oxidant because it is associated with the production of the hydroxyl radical, also reacts with the potent peroxynitrite oxidant, thus having an antioxidant action. According to JBC, these results “broaden the conventional view of this biologically important metal, with implications for redox biology, infection, inflammation (when peroxynitrite’s precursors are generated), and beyond”.
