Alicia Kowaltowski was selected as a Fellow of the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine (F-SfRBM). The title is conferred annually to members who have made outstanding contributions to the association as well as the field of free radical chemistry, redox biology and antioxidants.

“In my opinion, the nomination as an SfRBM Fellow is an achievement for Redoxoma, because from the beginning one of our objectives was to have greater insertion in recognized international societies, and specifically in SfRBM”, said Kowaltowski, adding that "The leadership of Ohara and other colleagues in the Society was absolutely necessary for us, other Redoxoma members, to also gain visibility and recognition in SfRBM”.

Alicia KowaltowskiKowaltowski is the second Brazilian scientist selected as Fellow of the SfRBM. The first was Ohara Augusto, director of RIDC Redoxoma, in 2012.

With more than 130 papers published in prestigious scientific journals, Kowaltowski is full professor at the Instituto de Química of Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and a member of the Center for Research of Redox Processes in Biomedicine (RIDC Redoxoma). She is also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo.

Criteria for fellow status include consistently publishing in the field relating to free radical and redox biology research and recognizable contribution to research in these fields. Contributions to the Society are also evaluated, such as leadership, participation in committees and editorial boards of society journals.

The Society for Redox Biology and Medicine (formerly the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine) was established in 1987 in response to a growing recognition of the "dark side" of oxygen as a major issue for the life sciences.
