Paolo Di Mascio is elected to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences

Professor Paolo Di Mascio, from the Instituto de Química at Universidade de São Paulo (IQ-USP) and a member of the RIDC Redoxoma, was elected a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). The results of the elections for the new full members, correspondents, and affiliates were announced at the General Assembly held on December 3rd. The inauguration will take place on January 1st, 2021, and those elected will receive the diplomas during the ABC 2021 Magna Reunion.

The current director of IQ-USP, Di Mascio has a degree in Clinical Chemistry from Université Libre de Bruxelles and in Biomedical Technology from Université Catholique de Louvain; Ph.D. in Biomedical Technology from the Faculté de Médecine of the Université Catholique de Louvain / University of Düsseldorf; and post-doctorate from the University of São Paulo. He is coordinator of Technology Transfer of the RIDC Redoxoma and director of the NAP-Redoxoma. He is also a Full Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences.

Paolo Di MascioThe researcher was born in Cardito, Vallerotonda, “Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo”, Lazio, Italy, in 1961, and is a Brazilian citizen since 2017. In 1988 he came to USP to carry out experiments in collaboration with professor Carlos Menck, then at the Instituto de Biociências (IB-USP), as part of his doctorate. After his doctorate, he worked as a researcher with Professor Etelvino Bechara, within a BID-USP project, and later as a visiting professor at CNPq. In 1994 he was hired at the IQ. He did his Livre-docência in 1996 and is a Full Professor since 2000. Di Mascio has always worked with biochemical reaction mechanisms involving species in the electronically excited state, mainly singlet oxygen, and redox reactions, using photochemistry and mass spectrometry techniques.
