The researchers Ohara Augusto, Alicia Kowaltowski, Mauricio S. Baptista, and Paolo Di Mascio, from the Instituto de Química of USP and the RIDC Redoxoma, are among the most recognized scientists in the world scientific environment, according to a study that analyzed the ranking of scientists from the Scopus database, published in October in the journal Plos Biology.

The study was carried out by researchers at Stanford University led by John Ioannidis and provides a database of the 100,000 top-scientists according to a composite index, in addition to the top 2% of scientists of their main subfield discipline. The data are separated into two rankings, one assessing scientists for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 and the other with citation impact during the single calendar year 2019. Ohara is in the first ranking, Maurício and Paolo in the second, and Alicia in both.

The database provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to articles in different authoring positions, and a composite indicator. Metrics are provided with and without self-citation. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields, and specific field and subfield percentiles are also provided.

Based on the published data, ecologist Kleber Del Claro, a professor at the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), listed the 600 top-scientists from Brazilian institutions in the career-long impact ranking and published on the science dissemination site A Ciência que nós fazemos, of which he is the director.
